Tteokbokki has no doubt become one of the most popular Korean snacks known globally, but do you know that "bokki" means something fried, and "tteok" actually means rice cake in Korean? And the long cylinder shape is not the only variant of rice cake, there is also the flat oval shape tteok(rice cake) that we are presenting to you now!
Same as the cylinder shape rice cake, the oval shape Tteok is made with pounded rice. Compared to the cylinder ones, flat rice cakes are thinner and softer, thus absorbing much better the flavours in the soup or sauce, which is widely used in non-spicy recipes, such as Tteokguk, a heart-warming Korean rice cake beef soup, topped with beef strips, thin egg juliennes, spring onions, and roasted seaweed.
Strangely, this oval shape rice cake is almost identical to "nian gao 切片年糕", a Chinese rice cake eaten in Shanghai and Zhejiang areas in China. There are literally more than 100 ways to enjoy rice cakes in China, you can try to stir-fry it with shredded meat in soysauce, to serve it with seafood soup with crab meat and clams, or make a vegan dish with vegetables and mushrooms.
