Originated from the regions of Zhejiang and Fujian, Chinese rice cake aka. 年糕 or Nian Gao is a traditional food made with pounded rice.
You can experiment with the cooking of rice cakes in different combinations of meat, seafood and vegetables. Specific recipes for rice cakes do not really exist, as there are literally hundreds of ways to enjoy them in China, usually with a non-spicy condiment. Our only suggestion is to cook them in a stew type of sauce or in a soup which is a little saltier than usual, as the rice cakes need to absorb quite a bit of liquid and be completely cooked through in order to be flavourful and tender.
These Chinese rice cakes are extremely similar to the Korean sliced tteokbokki, in terms of ingredients, taste and texture. Use them in a Korean rice cake recipe if you want, be creative and the food will always surprise you!
