Called Garaetteok in Korean and Watermill Rice Cakes in China, these cylinder shape rice cakes are usually freshly made in watermills and get delivered to local markets daily. The use of both white and glutinous rice makes these rice cakes more elastic and chewy than the other commercial ones.

These are not the usual rice cake you see because they are 17cm long and 3.5cm wide each! Their size and shape are actually the reason that they are considered versatile:

Thinly sliced, you'll get the oval-shape rice cake for a Chinese stir-fry or for Korean tteokguk soup
Cut each bar into 7 to 8 bite-size pieces, you'll get the perfect size for Korean stir-fry Tteokbokki
Steam the entire rice cake bars for 10 minutes or grill them until golden brown, then cut each bar into 4 pillow-shaped pieces, dipped them in salty cheese sauce or sweet soy sauce, wrapped with toasted seaweeds. We have to say that the last one is our favorite!

Store at room temperature. Seal and keep in fridge after opening.
